Obituary for William James Ivey

William James Ivey, 76, a resident of Hecla Street Calumet passed away Thursday morning May 5, 1994 shortly after being admitted at the Calumet Public Hospital following an apparent heart attack. He was born on Sept. 25, 1917 in Mohawk a son of the late William T. & Martha Ivey and attended the Mohawk schools and was a graduate of Calumet High School with the class of 1938. He also was a graduate of the University of Michigan receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. For several years he worked in Chicago, Mankato, Minnesota, Detroit, and Hancock where he owned & operated the Ivey Jewelers. He later taught in various local schools including Copper Harbor school and at the time of his retirement in 1980, he was with the Probate Court in Houghton County. On Feb. 6, 1943, in Detroit, he married the former Grace Hammes of Calumet and after several years they moved back to Calumet. He was a member of the Community Church of Calumet, a past president of the Keweenaw Kiwanis Club and past president of the Houghton Co. Historical Society, and was a member of the Fort Wilkins Historical Association, and the University of Michigan Alumini Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha & William T. Ivey.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 A.M. in the Erickson-Crowley Funeral Home with the Rev. Milo Van Veldhuizen to officate. Burial to be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call at the Erickson-Crowley Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 7 P.M. In Lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests memorials be given to the Community Church of Calumet.
