Obituary for Dorothy V Harjala (Maki)

Dorothy Harjala of Copper City, passed away Friday, April 15, 2022 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. Dorothy was born January 27, 1926 in Iron Mountain, a daughter of William and Edla (Krapu) Maki. She attended Mohawk schools. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Edward and son Reed in 2014; her parents; 5 brothers, Arthur Kemila, Elmer Maki, Einar Makie, Arnold Maki, and LeRoy Makie; 4 sisters, Sylvia Willette, Ellen Hitsman, Verna Raisanen, and Martha Harjala. She is survived by: Son, David (Sandra) Harjala of Knoxville, TN; Grandchildren, April (Joseph) Biondi of Garland, TX, Allan (Mardi Parelman) Harjala of San Diego, CA, Sean (Cassie) Harjala of Raeford, NC, and Jessie Harjala of Lawrence, MI; Great-grandchildren, Lily, Chelsea, and Carson; Great-great-grandchildren Braxxton and Elijah; Sisters-in-law Lillian and Shirley Harjala; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Dorothy lived a long life of actively serving others. She was a longtime active member of Laurium Shining Light Church and a dedicated officer of the Gay Bazaar Rummage Sale that raises money for the Sherman Township Volunteer Fire Department. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy, donations in Dorothy’s memory to Laurium Shining Light Church would be appreciated.
