Obituary for Irene E. Somero

LAURIUM - Irene Elizabeth Somero, 100, of Laurium, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 surrounded by her family and loved ones.
She was born in Lake Linden on November 8, 1921, the daughter of Victor and Sarah Jackonen. Growing up on her family’s farm on Golf Course Road in Hubbell, she attended the Lake Linden Public Schools.
Irene and her WWII soldier fiancé, Henry Somero, were married at the home of Rev. John Nelson in Southfield, MI on May 19, 1945. Throughout their 62 years of marriage, they spent 25 years in Berkley, MI. Irene was employed as a bookkeeper for Federal Hardware & Supply during that time. Upon their retirement in 1979, the couple moved back to the Copper Country to be close to their grandchildren, whose lives they filled with love and wonderful memories.
Irene happily served 15 years on the Keweenaw Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxillary and was an active member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church, in both Farmington Hills and Calumet.
Preceding her in death, were her parents; her husband, Henry; two sisters, Marion (Ray) Kotaniemi and Margaret (Mewton) Rowe; three brothers, Wayne, Charles and Felix (Margaret) Jackonen; a granddaughter, Emily Jane Storm; three great grandchildren, Rylan, Carlee and Tage Seppanen.
Surviving, and left to mourn her passing, are two daughters, Jane (Alex) McNaughton of Mishawaka, IN and Mary (Phillip) Storm of Dollar Bay; nine grandchildren, Andrew (Amy) Storm, Sarah (Reid) Felsing, Eva (Seth) Loyd, Gwen (Dan) Kilpela, Jennifer (Greg) Seppanen, Todd (Dinah) Storm, Abby (Jake) Bjorn, Benjamin (Katie) Storm, and Alisa (Levi) Pietila; and 25 great grandchildren.
Friends may call from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Erickson Crowley, Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, with funeral services starting at 2:00 at the funeral home with Pastor Mark Halonen to officiate. Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Lake Linden.
The family would like to thank Dr. Janners, Dr. David Kass and also the caring staff at Garden View, Portage Pointe and Aspirus Home Hospice for the wonderful care they provided.
