Marie Ann Ryding, Age 57, a resident of Laurium passed away on Sunday September 13, 2015.
She was born on June 22, 1958 in Laurium, a daughter of the late Wilho and Anna (Mattson) Wittaniemi.
Raised in Jacobsville, Marie graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School with the Class of ’76. She attended Michigan Technological University, earning a degree in Business Administration.
The week after she turned 16, Marie began her first job at the Dreamland Hotel. She also worked at the Michigan House and Group W Westinghouse/Bresnan Communications. She began her employment at Michigan Tech on November 18, 1985, first in the Registar’s Office and, for the last 15 years, in the Financial Aid Office as the Associate Director. She greatly enjoyed the daily interaction with students, families, faculty, and staff as well as helping students realize their dreams of achieving a college education.
Marie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet. She was preceded in death by her parents, newborn son, and former husband, Doug.
She is survived by her daughter Kaisa of Laurium; one sister, JoAnn (Larry) DeRoche of Lake Linden: Two brothers, John (Gisela) Wittaniemi of Frankfurt, Germany, Wally (Shelley) Wittaniemi of West Olive, MI: Special friend Larry Danis of Laurium; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Friday September 18, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with the Rev. Peter Vorhes to officiate.
