Obituary for Hilda Ellen Hyrkas (Hakasaari)

Hilda Ellen  Hyrkas (Hakasaari)
Hilda Hyrkas, 92, of Centennial passed away peacefully with her family by her side in the early morning of Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.

Hilda was born July 11, 1923 in Mohawk to Frederick and Hilma (Pelli) Hakasaari.

She was a graduate of Calumet High school.

Hilda worked for Bohn Aluminum in Detroit for a couple of years.

Hilda was united in marriage to Eli Hyrkas on June 19, 1948. The couple lived in Traprock Valley and then moved to Centennial and lived there for many years. Eli preceded her in death on December 15, 2003

Hilda was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Calumet.

She was a wonderful cook and baker. Nobody went away hungry from Grandma's house. Hilda enjoyed picking berries, sewing, reading, walking, cross country skiing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She spent the last five years of her life in the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.

Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, son Gerald, daughter Sandy Lasanen, grandson Robert Johnson, brothers Wagner Saari, Henry Hakasaari, Wilho Hakasaari, sisters Marie Grey, Martha Harju, Marion Hakasaari, and Julia Hakasaari.

She is survived by son Raymond of Big Traverse, daughters Judith (Gary) Mattson of Boston Location, Marjorie Haataja of Menahga, MN, Linda (Gordon) Johnson of Crystal, MN, Carol (Russell) Berg of Laurium, 47 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren, son in law Denny Lasanen and daughter in law Cindy Hyrkas and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, December 26, 2015 at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet, with Pastor David Taivalkoski to officiate. Visitation will start at 11:00 AM until time of service.

Spring burial will be at the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the wonderful care they have given to Hilda for the past five years.
